When planning a celebration cake it's worth knowing how many portions your cakes will serve. This handy table will help guide you when deciding the sizes of your cakes.
These serving amounts are based on party-sized portions of 1.5 inch x 2 inch, and smaller wedding-sized portions of approx 1 inch x 2 inch. The pictures below will show the most servings available for your cake (wedding servings 1 x 2).
This guide is for cakes 3-6 inches high. Cakes shorter than 3 inches would yield half the number of servings indicated below.
Please note, these number of servings are intended as a guide only - and it's always better to have more cake!

Wedding Slices 1"x 2"
Cutting Tiered (including very tall) Cakes: Smaller tiered cakes - cut from the top down. There's a cake board under each cake, which will tell you when to stop your knife. After those slices are gone, remove the cake board and start the next tier. Remove any wooden dowels or straw supports as you see them (they are hard to miss!). For taller tiered cakes, you may wish to remove the top tiers and cut them on the table.
Cutting 3D Sculpted Cakes: Just go for it! Anything goes...and an additional square/round/sheet cake can sometimes sit underneath or be served separately to increase servings.
